If you have an inpatient or outpatient procedure scheduled at St. Vincent, you may be asked to visit our Pre-Procedure Clinic located in Washington Square Mall. At the clinic, we gather important information about your health and complete pre-procedure tests ordered by your physician.
The information gathered at the clinic tells your physician and/or anesthesiologist if you are in the best physical condition for your procedure. Evaluating your condition before a procedure ensures it will go smoothly and protects your health.
Your doctor will schedule an appointment at the clinic for you. You'll need to visit the clinic at least two days before your procedure.

What can I expect during my appointment at the Pre-Procedure Clinic?
You can expect the following during your visit to the Pre-Procedure Clinic:
- A healthcare provider will take your health history and answer your questions about the procedure.
- You'll complete tests ordered by your doctor.
- You'll learn what medications you should or should not take before your procedure.
- You'll discuss other important information about surgery.
What should I bring?
Please bring these important items with you to the Pre-Procedure Clinic:
- Your photo ID
- Your insurance card/s
- Phone number(s) of your primary care physician and any other specialist you regularly see
- Orders from your physician (if you have them)
- All your medicines in the bottles they came in (including prescriptions and any over-the-counter medicines or herbals)
- A list of any allergies (including the type and severity of reaction)
- List of questions you may have
- Copy of your advanced directive (if you have one)
If you are having a total joint replacement, please bring:
- Your binder of information (if you've been given one)
- A family member with you

Will you have enough information to know if I'm ready for my procedure?
In most cases, your provider will have enough information to know if you're ready for your procedure if your medical records are complete and updated.
If we identify an underlying problem during your Pre-Procedure Clinic visit, we'll need to address it before your procedure. If this happens, we'll make arrangements for more testing or provide necessary medications during your visit.
Will my procedure be delayed for any reason?
It’s very unlikely your procedure will need to be delayed. However, even a simple problem like a common cold can make a procedure less safe. Other times, tests may show that an existing medical condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes is not well controlled. If you have a medical condition, your healthcare provider may start treatments to improve your health.
What if my medical condition is complicated or I'm not ready for my procedure?
Your physician will recommend the treatment you should receive before your procedure or decide whether the procedure is right for you at this time.
Do I still need to visit the clinic if my doctor didn't order tests or I'm having tests done somewhere else?
No. You'll just need to call the clinic to make a phone appointment to go over your health history. If you've had testing done somewhere else, please have the facility fax the results to us.
